Investigate a rock wall to learn more about types of rocks in Iowa.



Description

This is a 360 video of a wall of rock in Graf, Iowa. This wall of rock is unique because it shows many layers of rock that would have been deposited over many years as the glaciers advanced and retreated across Iowa during the Ice Age.

Let’s take a closer look at the wall. We will navigate by clicking on the right arrow which will move our view a quarter turn each time we click it. It will take us 20 clicks to get back our starting point.

  1. You are facing the wall. The wall is brown in color and has bumps and grooves. There are three distinct sections in the wall. From top to bottom, they are:
    1. A section of small craters and small hills make up the rock wall in this section. As you look from left to right, you can see a distinct wave pattern. This section begins the rock outcropping.
    2. The next section down continues the rock outcropping creating a small overhang for the next section right under this one. In this section, you see layers of rock like uneven playing cards stacked on top of each other.
    3. In the last section down the wall, you again see the craters and hills and if you look from left to right you can see a distinct wave pattern.
  2. Click 2. You see two sections instead of three and there is a small cave in the top section.
    1. The top section still has the craters and small hills, but when you look further to your right, you see a small cave and the craters and hills are less distinct.
    2. The next section down you see layers of rock like uneven playing cards stacked on top of each other, but these layers stacked on top of each other continue into the original third section.
  3. Click 3. The sections of rock are not as distinct. You see craters and hills as well as layers of rock stacked like playing cards. Our explorer has moved back into the frame and is examining the rock.
  4. Click 4. The sections of rock are not as distinct, You see craters and hills as well as layers of rock stacked like playing cards. You can now see trees that are growing beside the rock wall. The explorer is still examining the rock.
  5. Click 5. You can see gravel and a large section of the rock wall if you look down and to you right. You can now see trees that are growing beside the rock wall, and the beginning of a roadway. The explorer is still examining the rock. You see the beginning of the words Graf, IA
  6. Click 6. The gravel and large section of the rockwall is now centered in the frame. You can now see trees that are growing beside the rock wall, and more of the road way. The explorer is still examining the rock. You see more of the words Graf, IA.
  7. Click 7. The gravel and large section of the rockwall is on the left side of the image. You see the trees and roadway. The explorer is to the left of the image and is still examining the rock. You see the tail end of the words Graf, Iowa.
  8. Click 8. You can no longer see the rock wall. If you look down you see gravel and dirt. The main focus of the image is the trees and the road.
  9. Clicks 9-19 you are facing the 2 lane highway and can not see the rock wall at all.
  10. Click 20. You are back to where you started.
