Iowa Becomes a State
In 1846 Iowa became the 29th state in the union.

Elections were held for all state officials in October of 1846 with Ansel Briggs, a Democrat, winning the Governor’s office. The Democrats also won a majority of seats in the General Assembly. On December 28, 1846, President Polk signed the bill making Iowa the 29th state in the Union. Iowa had reached the end of the path to statehood.
