Join Iowa PBS on September 30 at 6 p.m. at Living History Farms for an exclusive preview of our newest documentary, The Pope's Visit to Iowa. This remastered film follow's Pope John Paul II's first trip to the U.S. as leader of the Roman Catholic Church in the fall of 1979.

When an Iowa farmer sent a passionate invitation to the newly elected pontiff to visit Iowa, he set a breathtaking and unprecedented event for the state into motion. The Des Moines Roman Catholic Diocese commissioned a filmmaker to document the preparations, offering a unique perspective on the pope's visit to Iowa.

Refreshments and optional tours of the Church of the Land will be available beginning at 5 p.m. A discussion with John Torpy, producer at Iowa PBS, and individuals featured in the documentary will follow the hour-long online premiere.
