Our Top Stops at the Iowa State Fair
Our series Road Trip Iowa has taken an adventure across Iowa's scenic byways, enjoying the historic sites, unique attractions and natural beauty along the way. Here are our top five stops when visiting the Iowa State Fair.
#1 The Iowa PBS Booth.
Obviously one of our favorite stops is our own booth! This year features a variety of different elements for all ages. Enjoy a life-size replica of Clifford’s dog house with our furry friend inside and dog bones galore! Test your Iowa PBS knowledge with our trivia wall, look at some antiques that give nod to Antiques Roadshow’s visit earlier this year to Living History Farms and find your county’s license plate next to our VW bus photo-op.
In addition we have daily meet and greet visit’s with some of Iowa PBS’s very own. Stop by to say hello to Paul Yeager from Market to Market, Kay Henderson from Iowa Press and more!
#2 Ye Old Mill
A true Iowa State Fair classic! Hop on Ye Old Mill for a 1,500 meter boat ride after a long and (usually hot) day at the fair. This ride was originally built in 1921 and then renovated in 1996 after it was in need of many structural repairs. They say it’s the perfect spot to take your loved one as you reminisce on your fair adventures!
#3 Pioneer Hall
Looking for antiques and other rare finds? Do you want to know how to work a printing press? Are you going to compete in rubber chicken throwing, the mom calling contest, the accordion contest or tons of other fun contests? Pioneer Hall is your stop for it all! You’re able to either join in on the friendly competition or watch and observe the contestants showing what they got!
#4 The Ferris Wheel
We recommend going around sunset if you’re able! You’ll get a beautiful view of the fairgrounds, all of the other rides lit up and a gorgeous Des Moines skyline. It’s another great way to sit and relax after a long day on the grounds.
#5 Who are we kidding EVERYTHING!
We tried to narrow it down, but that quickly became impossible. We love everything there is to offer at the Iowa State Fair! You can’t go wrong with whatever fun you decide to find. You won’t want to miss your free egg, the biggest boar, biggest pumpkin and so many other fun fair traditions.
Enjoy your time at the Iowa State Fair and tune in to our nightly coverage beginning Monday, August 12 at 9 p.m.
