Dasia Taylor 

Dasia Taylor, recently honored as one of USA TODAY’s Women of the Year, exemplifies the remarkable impact a young innovator can have. As an Iowa City native and high school student with no prior interest in science fairs, Taylor’s unexpected decision to participate led her to victory after victory, culminating in a groundbreaking invention. Now, at the age of 20, Taylor is not only a college student but also the CEO of VariegateHealth and a prominent advocate for STEM education. Her story highlights how determination and a drive to address disparities can lead to transformative innovations and inspire others to break barriers and achieve greatness.

Girls Rock! Des Moines

Girls Rock! Des Moines, founded in 2013, offers programs that foster self-expression, artistic agency and community building. Girls Rock! Des Moines creates a supportive environment where participants can develop confidence and skills. With a mission rooted in social justice and intersectional feminism, the organization provides a safe space for marginalized voices to thrive and be heard. Girls Rock! Des Moines’ impactful initiatives include summer camps, after-school programs, and creative workshops, all designed to amplify the unique contributions of its diverse community and inspire future leaders in the arts.

High School Mariachi

In the vibrant town of Denison, Iowa, where over 60% of students are Latino/Hispanic, a groundbreaking initiative has bridged cultural gaps and united the community through music. The local high school's mariachi band, the first of its kind in Iowa, has become the school's and town's cornerstone. Celebrating a decade of success, the ensemble features nearly 70 students across four groups and has fostered a sense of inclusion and connection. The mariachi program celebrates the Latino heritage and weaves together the diverse threads of Denison's community, linking students from different backgrounds and enriching the local cultural landscape.

Iowa ProStart

The Iowa ProStart Invitational, organized by the Iowa Restaurant Association Education Foundation, is Iowa's premier state championship for high school culinary and restaurant management teams. Over 150 students show off their culinary, management and cake-decorating skills. Top-performing teams in both the culinary and management categories will earn substantial scholarships for their post-secondary education and get the chance to compete at the National ProStart Invitational in Baltimore, Maryland. They can win additional scholarships, gain industry exposure and network with professionals nationwide.

High School Girls Wrestling

Tatum Shepherd, Lilly Luft, and Naomi Simon are making notable advancements in Iowa's girls' wrestling scene, which was officially sanctioned by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union in 2022. Their dedication and achievements have sparked increased interest and participation in the sport. Raising the profile of girls' wrestling motivates more schools to support and invest in it. Each athlete advocates for breaking down stereotypes and encourages other girls to embrace the sport with an open mind.
