Mythical Mystery: Could Bigfoot be in Iowa?
Iowa's landscape is as diverse as it is beautiful. But what if these picturesque scenes hide a secret? What if, lurking in the shadows, there's someone... or something... watching? Today we're searching for Bigfoot in Iowa.
Since the 1970s, Iowa has recorded an astounding 76 Bigfoot sightings. That's right, 76. This puts the Hawkeye State in the same league as traditional Sasquatch hotspots like Washington, California, and Oregon. The sightings are spread across the state, from the Mississippi River banks to the western prairies. Humboldt County leads the pack with nine reported encounters, while Dubuque and Dallas Counties aren't far behind.
Indigenous communities have their own unique and diverse bigfoot folklore although they bare little to no resemblance to popular culture's bigfoot descriptions instead often describing caretakers, spirits, guardians, refugees and people simply living in seclusion.
It's possible Bigfoot is simply the modern manifestation of our enduring fascination with the unknown, our desire to believe that even in our well-explored state, there may still be mysteries to solve.
So the next time you're hiking, camping or just enjoying all the outdoor beauty Iowa has to offer... keep your eyes and ears open. That rustle in the bushes? That strange sound in the distance? It might just be the wind... or it might be something else entirely. In Iowa, you never know what you might find if you're willing to look.
