Tracing Roots: A Journey With a Genealogy Expert
Genealogy research is not a new hobby, but it is becoming increasingly more popular. Discovering and documenting the history of your ancestors can be a deeply rewarding experience, offering a unique connection to the past and a better understanding of your family's history. It can also uncover fascinating stories, cultural traditions and historical events that shaped your lineage.
Kevin Spire, genealogy expert and volunteer with the Iowa Genealogical Society, shares ideas for creating a family tree, showcasing your findings and exploring genealogical research that reveals connections across generations.
Growing Your Family Tree
When getting started with your family research, take into assessment what you might already have at your disposal.
Starting with yourself allows you to work your way up your family tree into more time-intensive searches. As you go, you can connect with long-lost relatives while ensuring that you have the most accurate information along the way.
Take a look at your family photo albums and visit with relatives over the holidays. Check with more distant relatives about what they have stored in their attics or what they know about your family’s history. Talking to living relatives—and recording their stories, if possible—is a great way to document your ancestry for future generations.
Experiences and Mysteries
One hobby that sparked Kevin’s interest in genealogy was his love for photography. He enjoyed taking photos and collecting them. When he moved into his first home, he had accumulated old photos from other family members and displayed them on his mantle.
Even after hundreds of hours of research, Kevin continues to find new information and mysteries in his own ancestry. Genealogy is an ongoing hobby; the more you learn, the more you want to know.
Sharing Your Family Tree
When people think about sharing their genealogy research, they typically think of the traditional documentation, but there are many other ways to showcase your ancestry.
You can get creative with family photos making unique scrapbooks or displaying your family tree as art on your wall. Some families document their history through short stories or through yearly notes in their holiday cards. Thinking about the ways in which you want the next generation to learn about your ancestry can be an important step in your genealogy research.
