Iowa Past to Present Teacher's Guide: Chapter 17: Depression, Changing Times, and World War II
Introduction
The years after the First World War were a time when the new mixed with the old. Horse-drawn wagons and shiny automobiles shared the same roads. An Iowan set a speed record in an airplane. Radios brought music and news into homes, and movie theatres spread across the state. In the 1930s, however, the hard times spread beyond farming and times became tough for most people in the nation. It was the Great Depression, when many people were unable to find work and most families had little money. Meanwhile, a new leader, called Adolph Hitler, had come to power in Germany. He wanted his country to be the most powerful nation on earth. At the same time, Japan built up its military strength in the Far East. Other counties again prepared for war. The United States had become too involved in world affairs to stand apart.
