Importance of Women in Politics

I think that it is important for all of us to understand why having women with a seat at the table is important.

Why having people of color, be they male or female with seats at the table is important.

And it is important because people of different backgrounds think about questions and problems differently. They bring their life experience, a diverse life experience and that problem-solving acumen that comes from those diverse life experiences to the table and helps to change the agenda and actually become more creative in devising solutions.

But secondly I think it’s very important in terms of government for us to continue to try to live up to our ideal as a democracy. And a democracy has much more legitimacy when the people who govern look like the people who are governed in every way that we can define that, sex, race, age, educational attainment, religion. So diversity is good and it’s not scary, and it’s really important.
