Season 37
Meet the Announcers
Tim Johnson
For the past 39 years Tim Johnson has been “The Voice of College Wrestling” making him the longest-tenured wrestling TV broadcaster in the sport’s history. An Iowa native, Tim’s life has been committed to wrestling. After competing for Morning Sun High School and Coe College, Tim became a successful high school wrestling coach at Mt. Vernon High School where he coached several state champions. Additionally, Johnson worked as the assistant executive director for USA Wrestling, the sport’s national governing body, and as the director of wrestling for the XXIII Olympiad at Los Angeles in 1984.
Tim’s broadcasting career began with Iowa PBS in 1986. Since then, he has broadcast over 500 college wrestling meets for Iowa PBS, the Big Ten Network and ESPN. In 2007 and 2008 Tim was honored as NWCA’s Broadcaster of the Year and WIN Magazine’s Journalist of the Year.
Tim is a member of three halls of fame, including the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame, and the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa at the Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, Iowa. In 2014 Tim was inducted as a distinguished member into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Oklahoma, receiving the prestigious Order of Merit award honoring a lifetime of contributions to the sport of wrestling. He currently serves as an associate on the board of governors for the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. In 2023 Tim retired after 30 years serving in sports ministry with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Jim Miller
Jim Miller is the director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, Iowa.
He attended the University of Northern Iowa, where he became a two-time NCAA champion in the sport of wrestling.
His greatest accomplishments were yet to come during a 37-year coaching career in the sport of wrestling: seven years at the high school level, eight years as the top assistant at UNI, and then 22 years as head coach at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.
When Jim arrived at Wartburg, the program had not won a conference championship in 13 years and had never won an NCAA title. When he retired 22 years later, they had won 21 consecutive Iowa Conference Championships, accumulated a dual meet record of 413 wins versus 34 losses, and won 10 NCAA team championships.
Only five coaches in the history of the sport have won 10 or more national team titles, and two of them are from Waterloo, Iowa: Dan Gable and Jim Miller.
Coach Miller is a member of 10 halls of fame and was named National Coach of the Year five times. He is also a well-known motivational speaker.
College wrestling action returns to Iowa PBS with five exciting small college duals, including powerhouse programs from Division II, Division III and the NAIA. On the call will be the legendary duo of Tim Johnson, "The Voice of College Wrestling," and Jim Miller, 10-time NCAA Division III champion coach and five-time National Coach of the Year.
