It's time for state championship volleyball here. From Extreme Arena in downtown Coralville. It's the 100th edition and year for the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, and it is the state volleyball championships here on Iowa PBS. We have the class 2A title match as Beckman Catholic takes on the top seeded Blackhawks of Hinton. Hi again everyone with Dr. Joanna Settles. This is B.J. Schaben. And here we go. This could be maybe the best match of the day.
I think so. The interesting chess piece here is who will control that first pass.
It certainly will. And as we take a look at the resumes for these two teams. First off, for Beckman Catholic, how about this first trip to the state championship since 2000. But they've been here quite frequently. They've got a senior libero in Addison, Hogan, who can get it all.
And how about sophomore Addie Koelker? Tied two way record with 58 assists in the semifinal.
Meanwhile, Perry Hinton. This is a team that came so close a year ago, finishing just short in the 2A title match a year ago. They're back again. They've got a great sophomore group as they've reloaded with Ortegren, Friessen, Charlson and also Boeve.
And setter Addison Dunkel, who averages ten assists per set.
Well, let's hear more about these two teams. Let's turn it over to today's public address announcer Tim Fitzpatrick.

Line judges Ashley Pierce and Hayley Boardman. All right, who's ready to win a state championship?
[MUSIC]
All right. They're getting fired up here at Extreme Arena. And to find out a little bit more insight into the game, how about the keys to this match up here today. What do they need to do?
Beckman Catholic wants to mix up their attacks and be aggressive and have well-paced serving to the right spots. Hinton wants to establish offensive balance. That's what's gotten them here and capitalize on free balls scoring at every opportunity.
Well, these two teams are going for their first ever state volleyball title. And what a championship trophy that would be to put into your case any year. But this year, a little more special as the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union is celebrating its 100th anniversary. First time that these two schools have ever met on the volleyball court. Hinton again rolling in here at 33 and three. Beckman Catholic looking for their 40th win of the season. And what a remarkable year it's been. In the preseason, they lost their all state setter from a year ago, and Paige Fangman. And they have just rebuilt, reloaded and found a way to get it done. They'll be wearing the white uniforms with green numbers trimmed in gold and Hinton wearing their black uniforms with yellow. As we are about ready to get this one underway. You think there's nerves for these
[MUSIC]
two teams?
There are, but it's good to be a little nervous because you're so excited and you want to play your best volleyball right now.
Well, it will be Beckman Catholic. The Trailblazers will start out on serve. They've gone five and one against the state tournament field this year. Again, they finished as a runner up back in 2000, their third straight trip. And the opening serve is underway as Hinton goes to the outside. The block is there. How about that for Beckman Catholic to get it started?
That's a lot of energy on that quick double block. Hinton has to make sure they have a better pass so they can get a better ball to their outside hitter.
Isabel Kluesner and Addie Koelker combining on that assisted block. Here comes Hinton again on the attack and it's a long shot as Rayland Kempema tried to power that one through.
Yeah, that might be a great opportunity to roll shot something in. You want to keep that ball in play.
So we're back at it. The Blackhawks again to go to the outside. This time they do tip and Beckman Catholic goes to their middle. And you know they haven't been in the state championship since 2000. But they've been playing with some confidence here through the first three points.
Yes. When you're in system and everything goes as planned. It is a great offense. And Kluesner right there puts it away.
Hinton trying to get the side out and they hit fingertips up top and they do get the side out as the Blackhawks get their first point on the board.
Yes a nice job there. By Kempema getting the score off that block.
Well hitting a big rebuilding project this year. They lost four starters off of last year's team, including the sensational player in Bailey Boeve, who's now at Creighton. Yes.
It's supposed to be. It's supposed to be this rebuilding year. And what a rebuilding year to be playing in this match.
Here come the Blackhawks. A quick tip at the net, but we're going to see a lift out of referee one Nikki O'Keefe making the call. There are again as Carl Wooldridge.
That ball was passed so close to the net. That's all the setter could do. Trying to stay out of the net but was not able to.
So Burkle serve going to be handled. And again, the quick strike out of the southpaw. How about that as Hinton comes right back with Macie Charlson?
Yes. Here's the lefty. A nice set. There she goes down the line and it's too hot to handle.
And that was one of Beckman's concerns is how can they handle the pins here today.
Right. It's such a wonderful balanced offense. But that's how you handle it right there. You come back and you hit hard. How about the right side attack?
Yeah. Kluesner really transitioned well. She has 28 kills now at the state tournament. A terrific run by her. And really we haven't seen the the big hitters Ortegren or Burkle get involved yet for each team.
Right. That speaks to the balance of this team.
Free ball opportunity here for the trailblazers. They'll go to the middle. A high point touch. And now they go to the back corner. What a crafty move by Addison Dunkel the five nine junior. I mean a passing and setting machine this year. Found the back corner.
Great. Heads up play. You know the middle back defense is there. So you go to zone five to score.
Trailblazers come back the first swing of the night for Burkle. And it's blocked. No. Blocked out.
Here's the set by Koelker. Such a great set. She powers it through the double block
[LAUGHTER]
for the score.
Burkle over 500 kills in her career, the junior now has 47 kills here at the state tournament, hitting above 350. Big swing going to be dug up out of the back by Hogan. Hogan will just have to play it over and right away. Ellie Friessen hitting above 500 at the state tournament finds the opening.
You have to love that quick offense. A fast tempo ball to the setter and Friessen sends it home.
And now she's on serve. And how about the year she's had. Last year, had back surgery, missed the entire season, and now having the opportunity to come back.
Yes. And what a night. The other night she had 12 kills yesterday.
And that one gets in. Oh wow. Marksmanship by Addie Ortegren.
Yes. And that's why you snap your wrist to try to get the backspin to hit the end line. And it does.
Just a terrific shot as this one starts to tighten up. And again, Beckman Catholic can't get set. Here comes Hinton and a block. But no, it stayed on the Trailblazers side of the net.
Yes. And that's what you need to do on those free balls is terminate
[APPLAUSE]
.
Reason with the tough
[LAUGHTER]
serve. Roll shot. To the outside. And that one left something to be desired as it rolled off of the hand of Taylor Derocher.
I think that set was off the net and she was hoping it was a bit closer, so she adjusted, but not quick
[APPLAUSE]
enough.
Joy Burkle, who's had such a great tournament run here so far on the serve. But guess what? Derocher comes back and gets one down. Side out Hinton.
Yeah, it's a nice sharp attack there.
Last year Hinton lost the 2A title match in five sets to Denver. Blazers come right back at it and they get the side out as Bri Blush gets her first kill here in the state title match.
It is. You've seen him out of the left side here they go to the right side to Busch. And the defense is there quick enough. And they score again.
So Hogan. Serves it tough. In the block. Well the shot was way strong by Kempema. Kempema able to get that one down. And how about RaeLynn doctor. So you ever hear of this. She started her freshman year at outside went to right side. Now this year playing middle.
That's the versatility and that's the confidence this team has in their passing. To be able
[LAUGHTER]
to get it to her in the middle.
Battle joust at the net. It's going to be one because there was a touch on the net by Beckman Catholic. And so we are all tied up at nine after the Trailblazers started out with a three nothing lead.
[APPLAUSE] [APPLAUSE]
Big swing will be popped back up. Good up that time by Dunkel
[APPLAUSE]
. Plays her set up. Run the attack to perfection. How about that? As Jaylin Burkle gets in the action?
Yes. Again, a fast tempo pass to get the offense going. So it's very difficult on the defense to get your middle over all the way to the right to put up a good block.
Hinton again, another big swing. Good touch at the net and again. Burkle. Jalen strike successfully. She had 19 kills 15 digs in the semifinals. And it was off to a great start here.
Yes here she is on the outside powering it through. Hinton needs to penetrate over the net. Really push with their hands to try to get a block.
Blackhawks right back at it and they go to Kempema and RaeLynn able to get the side out. Here's a look at Kate Ortegren, co-head coach with Robyn Moore. You know, when you have co-head coaches, you only get one that can stand up. And Kate said, well, between us both, I'm too jittery on the bench, so I need to be up and moving so you'll see her and we'll hear from them throughout this match as again, we appreciate the coaches here at the state volleyball tournament saying, yeah, put a mic on us. We want to give insight to you at home. The Blackhawks rally behind that one. Trailblazers set it up off the slide.
[APPLAUSE] [APPLAUSE]
See what they run again as Koelker will set it up to her middle. The deep shot. Oh, great effort on that back row by Burkle. Battle at the net and the joust is going to be won by Beckman Catholic.
That's our longest volley of the day so far. And you can feel the momentum with that. How about the one handed save there to keep it alive.
Three point advantage here. Matching their largest lead here in the opening set. Off the slide again that handled. As they go out of system for Hinton. And it pays off Macie Charlson with another kill.
That's not an easy ball to kill. She again was set back pretty far towards the ten foot line, and it kept. It went cross court, kept it high and deep and it drops in.
There's Kimmy Höfling now substituting in to serve. On the attack, the shot. The block
[APPLAUSE]
back. Oh my Addison Dunkel saying hello. Check this out.
And there you can see the penetration as they push over. Ellie Friessen getting half credit. There.
Dunkel sets it up to the outside. The big swing. Oh, what a shot by Ortegren. These two teams, they're bringing it.
Here they are. Addie Ortegren that is the best set that she's had all day. And that's what she can do in system.
So a three point deficit erased Hinton trying to go for their first lead of this opening set of the class 2A title match. And that one will hit the antenna, and that's going to give it to Hinton
[APPLAUSE]
.
[APPLAUSE]
And a Time-out going to be taken by Todd Troutman. And this Beckman Catholic Trailblazers. Well, you can stay connected with Iowa PBS sports no matter where you're watching from. Great championships here so far. Waukee Northwest a sweep in the opener. That 4A title match will be tough to beat. Went five, but Norwalk prevailed to win their school's first ever state title. And then how about Western Christian doing what they do? Win state titles for Tammi Veerbeek and company?
Yes, they had to fight to the very end of that third set, but what a season.
[MUSIC]
And there they are, still enjoying it, you know. And you know Tammi Veerbeek you know they've been here 26 straight years to the semifinals. They've won numerous state championships. I don't think I've seen her more excited to win a state title than this year. I mean, she was going.
She was so excited. I actually heard her back behind her pep talk before the third set and I got fired up. She said one more and she was so intense, willing her team to win.
Beckman Catholic able to get the Side out to tie this one up at 14 apiece. There's Tammi Veerbeek congratulations to her and Western Christian dropping just one set here at the state tournament
[LAUGHTER]
as they move up to three A and now a service error and Hinton remains out in front here at 1514.
That's the balance and the risk with serving tough is that you have to keep an eye on how many errors you have because you're going for an ace.
[APPLAUSE]
Blackhawks come right back at it. The swing going to be elevated up by Hogan.
[APPLAUSE] [APPLAUSE]
Oh great hustle there by Dunkel just to keep that one alive. Dunkel setting to the outside again. They're attacking from the outside. Joust. And that's going to be won by Ellie Friessen
[APPLAUSE]
.
Friesen's net play has been impressive. How about Hogan digging things up there? She is keeping it alive and Friesen pressing over to
[LAUGHTER]
score.
Beckman Catholic right back at it. Big swing there by
[LAUGHTER]
Burkle.
[LAUGHTER]
Hinton just had to play it over and again. They go right after the middle. How about Joy Burkle 511 and coming right at you?
Yes, she had 25 kills in her last match and here she comes out of the middle and it goes through that double block.
What an opening set. Again we've seen four ties, one lead change
[LAUGHTER]
as Beckman Catholic tries to tie it up here again. Big swing and a little too much on it for Ellie Friessen. And we are tied at 16. Here's J.C Burkle. She's the younger sister of. You might have heard that joy in Jaylin Burkle. Coach Troutman said. She by far is the loudest. The older two are pretty stoic. And how about this J.C. Five seven freshman getting an opportunity here to serve again as she gives her team the lead back.
Yes. What confidence she has and bringing some volume with her serve.
And a service error will tie it up. Each team will serve aggressively here, among the best in the state. In serves serve efficiency as Hinton will bring it back again here with Friesen.
[LAUGHTER]
Back row attack by Burkle. Hey, that pays off. What a neat nifty play as Burkle runs behind the setter there. Koelker.
Yes, that combination is so effective and Burkle so versatile to hit from the outside and come from the middle.
Hinton. Trying to find it there with Kempema and that did touch. And how about this Beckman Catholic on a little bit of a roll here in a Time-out. Going to be taken by the Hinton Blackhawks Beckman Catholic up by two. Well, 1917 here in the class two a state championship. Guess what? You're sitting at home right now. With Dr. Joanna Settles on B.J. Schaben here in the class two, a state championship statewide here on Iowa PBS.
The difference right now for Beckman Catholic is the ball placement of the set by Addie Keltner. She is putting it in the perfect spot for her teammates to be successful.
Joy Burkle still on serve. And had a tremendous tournament to date, and Beckman Catholic people were wondering, how much do they have left? Is Hinton is able to get the Side out Beckman Catholic went five sets against Grundy Center and it was down to the very wire in Hinton. You know, kind of cruising right along. Knocked off Hudson beat an unbeaten Riverside team in the semifinals to advance.
Yes, both teams battled big time to get here.
We're going to see four hits by Hinton.
In that fifth set for Beckman Catholic to get here yesterday they scored seven straight after being behind. That was a heartbreaker for the other team, for sure. For Grundy Center.
Big strike. Oh, and able to get a hand on it was Burkle but just couldn't keep it on the court. What a strike again by Charlson. She's having herself a nice big day here. That's her third kill.
Yes, and I think the passers and the setters settling in here. Dunkel with another nice assist.
Big swing that hits antenna. And the Blackhawks will get the point. That was on the swing that it hit the antenna. And guess what? We're all knotted up at 20.
Yes, that one went outside. The only opportunity there was to go cross court.
Seventh time the opening set. We've had two lead changes. Battle at the net opportunity here for Hinton. They'll set it up again. Charlson oh! So quick.
So quick. And that all started with the pass by Brynlee Boeve to bring the heat by the lefty Charlson.
Chloe's Pickett serve just a little long and we'll be tied at 21.
Pickett is challenging Beckman Catholic end line to, you know, challenge them to take it. And so you'll see them serve deep and try to get an ace on that end line.
There's Amaya Koelker. Good on the back row as this one's going to be played up by Hogan swing and the block. Did it get out? Yes. A blocking error. And Beckman Catholic will have the lead again.
It goes up. Here's the double block by Kempema and Charlson and it barely ricochets off the wrong direction for them.
Almost hit Burkle ponytail. So close and that one did get down. Another kill for Kempema.
[MUSIC]
10th tie we've had here in the opening set. Beckman Catholic largest lead was at three. They get the lead here or maintain it.
Kluesner such a great job there. They Beckman Catholic has been hitting the ball hard multiple times and now they come back with a tip up and over the block to score.
They go to the middle. The block is there. Great recovery though. By Dunkel Beckman Catholic though very strong at the net, the blocking all state tournament long all season long has been sensational and we're at set point. And a time-out here by Hinton.
Nice time to take a quick break. That again those errors cost you that one. Ortegren tried to hit it. You know a little roll shot up over. Has to make sure it gets over the net.
Let's listen in on Hinton's huddle.
Attack. Get back to where you're going.
Find your hitters and go from there.
Hey, she's gonna run a one two, a three, and you got pin, pin, drop the middle and hold it. We don't want to walk down there. All right. I'm sure on the third.
Hey, Moore talk right now. Okay? It's stiff. It's not you. Okay? We smile, we have fun, we talk. We need that. Okay. Get comfortable out there. It's time to play. Here we
[APPLAUSE]
go.
[APPLAUSE]
Side out.
Kauffman three.
Let's go, let's go. Lead them. Here we go.
How would you break that down?
Well, you smile a lot when you win. And hitting won 33 games this year. And so they're not used to being behind. Used to this pressure. So look for them to score some points and get some more energy. But they have to fight right here.
Set point
[APPLAUSE]
number one.
[APPLAUSE]
Dunkel passes it back. Charlson with the big swing. Koelker there. Dunkel again to the outside, moving it from pin to pin. Here comes Beckman on the slide one tipped up Dunkel, leaving it for Charlson. Oh, great effort by Koelker. Big swing by Burkle and hit is gonna for set point
[APPLAUSE]
number two.
[APPLAUSE]
Hogan keeping the ball alive, trying to power through. But it's the double block for Hinton that scores.
Both of these two teams. Excellent on the block. No question. And there is the opening set point. It belongs to Beckman Catholic. One set to none. As we're in the class two, a state championship. As you're watching it here on Iowa PBS.

[APPLAUSE]
They remain the only association in the United States solely dedicated to overseeing girls high school interscholastic activities. You'll see their new hundred year logo here in Coralville. Inside the extreme arena on signage, T-shirts, and redesigned medals and trophies handed out for volleyball and all Iowa girls high school Athletic Union sanctioned high school sports. Wow, what an opener. 25 to 23. Beckman Catholic takes it over. Hinton as we move our way. To set number two and for Hinton, I think Coach Ortegren nailed it. They seemed a little tight.
A little reserved. And she said, you know what? Go hit the ball. Go hit the ball hard. And so Charlson I thought, came out. And and after that time-out and you know, she had a big swing. But how about Hogan. She is digging everything up. She already has seven digs for Beckman Catholic. So it's making it hard for him to score.
And conversely for Beckman Catholic, I mean, they have a few seniors on their roster. Their will is showing up here or did show up in that opening set.
It is. I mean, when Hogan is picking those balls up and you can set set the ball anywhere. I mean, they are putting the ball away. They're hitting percentages higher. They're hitting 286 compared to Hinton 214. So putting the ball a little better. Well placed for him will be key in set number two.
So here we go. Set number two with doctor Joanna Settles B.J. Schaben here on Iowa PBS. It is a class two a state championship. It is our fourth state championship of the day. And Beckman Catholic wanted to go after that one. But they laid off and good thing they did because it went out. A service error.
I thought it was going to be an ace right in the seam and was a bit too long.
So Jaylin Burkle will
[LAUGHTER]
serve for Beckman Catholic. Big swing down the line. No touch, no touch and Beckman Catholic much like they did in the opening set. Getting out to an early lead.
I like the attempt there by Addie Ortegren to try to go line, but she's got to keep it in bounds.
And guess what? The opening is there.
[LAUGHTER]
What a Kempema just took a lot off of that one and was able to knock it down.
She read that line defense and Hogan was back so far. She dropped one in.
So here's Brynlee Boeve. Little touch boob right there to it up now. Dunkel to Charlson and Hinton able to tie this one up.
Hogan a nice touch there but can't keep it alive and Charlson out of the right side. Dominating right now on offense for Hinton.
You don't see a lot of left handed outsides do you? Or right sides?
Excuse me? Right sides. That's where we try to put them. Right. So they have a little better angle. But she's doing a nice job and she has such a big block. It's that combination. So she can block on that side and stay open as she transitions to hit.
Addie Ortegren able to get the kill and again serving. Beckman Catholic able to power one through as Isabel Kluesner the five nine senior. You know battling some leg injuries. But she looked good there.
She did. She looks healthy. She's jumping well. They need to keep setting her. But now she'll head back to serve.
Dunkel Derocher shot handled.
[LAUGHTER]
How about Boobie getting underneath that one and Charlson with a quick poke. Again, a battle at the net. Beckman Catholic saying, did that hit the antenna? Now to the middle. How about freezing?
That is quite the trio from Boeve to Dunkel to Friessen, right around the double block hits the sideline for the score.
Normally you think if you're. If your middles are hitting above 300. Yeah, they're pretty good. They're having a great year. Friessen hitting above 450 now.
Outstanding. That speaks to the passing of Boeve and the back line as well.
And how about the dunk? Oh Addy Kelner how do you do?
Addy Koelker rises up. She's in the front row right now as a setter so she can attack and shocks the defense to score.
Koelker one of those setters that occasionally will love to attack. You've got to be on alert.
Yes you do. Both teams are Addy Koelker in that five one offense.
And this down the line for Joy Burkle. Five four Beckman Catholic out in front again as we have a lead change. Burkle now with five kills. Big block handled. Great recovery.
[LAUGHTER] [LAUGHTER]
Now the role and it's effective. Bri Blush celebrating that one. Why not? Crafty move.
Yes. In that Serve receive Friessen switched sides and went to the outside. Where? Side where Ortegren was on the right side and they didn't transition well enough. But Bush doing a nice job to balance the offense.
And a block, stayed in play. And that's going to be out
[APPLAUSE]
as Hinton will get the side out on the attack here. Now Ortegren will serve for Hinton. Big swing but blocked out. Great attack by Blush.
Yes, she is on the right side. And that Serve receive she was on the outside again going pin to pin. She tools the block and it bounces off the defender's hands out of bounds.
Dunkel with the dump handled right back at you, says Dunkel. And I'll take another kill. She's getting more active here.
Offensively she is. She's so quick she tries to dump the ball. It's played well and then she redirects it to the sideline beautifully by Duncan.
Big swing and it pays off for Jaylin Burkle. So Addison Hogan they call her Addy. Really. Coach Todd Troutman calling her the backbone of this team on the back row. And all the way through.
Nice pickup by Boeve.
Out of system here for Beckman Catholic. And Hinton will take the point. Derocher.
Derocher drops it in right in the middle to the donut hole of the defense of Beckman Catholic.
Now ready to serve as Dunkel 98% serve efficiency on the season and an attack error. Beckman Catholic saying. Was there a touch? Well, Nikki O'Keefe, your R one was right there and said no.
Yes, a good quick offense, but she didn't get on top of the ball to send it down.
[LAUGHTER]
Burkle shot
[APPLAUSE]
blocked. Oh how about that? The two timer Kempema along with Charlson.
It is a big rebound here and nobody is back deep to cover that block.
Third lead change. And we're only at
[LAUGHTER]
nine eight. Big swing down the line. Charlson puts it over and it's effective. Communication was def there between Koelker and Burkle.
And that's why you send it to a scene that high. Cross tip confuses him and she scores an easier point, but well placed.
Dunkel in the Hinton Blackhawks on a three point run here.
[APPLAUSE]
Dunkel setting it up for Charleston. Big swing and that went off of fingertips and Beckman Catholic wanting to get a time-out. They'll take one here down

Well, this is the fourth championship of the day in the class four, a state championship. Wow, that was a thriller. A five
Set thriller.
Won by Norwalk as they bested Clear Creek. Amana Waukee Northwest a winner in 5A 3A Western Christian. We've got another championship coming up next at 7:00 tonight, as it'll be Ankeny Christian taking on Janesville to cap off a great week here in Coralville.
[MUSIC]
Beckman leading this match, taking the opening set 25 to 23 and now an
[APPLAUSE]
ace.
And there's those smiles and the joy that coach was talking about for Hinton. But it's a lot of fun when you have an ace.
Five point run here for Hinton and that gets in that hit the line. Oh my.
[APPLAUSE] [APPLAUSE]
Nice call with serves there. Coach Ortegren serves it. The call short and then back deep. Back deep again. And they are in sync.
Six straight points by the Blackhawks. And a side out. A much needed side out as Bri Blush gets it done. Off with set by Addie Koelker.
Yes, she's playing fantastic volleyball. Bri Blush now she plays the front three rotations, but that off speed shot caught the defense where they couldn't react quick enough.
Block kept alive by Boobie and Dunkel. Addie Dunkel she's taking a team or been a part of a team. Well, let's just say she's taking a team to the state tournament in all four sports. Going to be going on to play college softball. And she's having herself a great second set here.
She has high volleyball IQ. She knows right where to place it, where the defense is it and can tip it to that back corner. And that back corner continues to be wide open. That's Macie Charlson with another kill.
Just spreading it around 159. The Hinton Blackhawks volleyball machine is starting to fire on all cylinders. Now their largest lead here
[APPLAUSE]
at seven.
[APPLAUSE]
Koelker and Burkle. You know, high fiving each other. Get back in sync with a good connection on
[LAUGHTER]
their next one.
Burkle blocked back down. Back row. Attack! Charlson. And they're going to say that
[APPLAUSE]
is in.
And that's where you have to consider changing your defense. Right with the block. You either take away cross or take away line. And you adjust the back row. And they need to do something to shut down that line shot.
Big swing and Hinton keeps it rolling.
Ortegren there with little hang time powering it through again.
And Todd Troutman is going to burn his final time out here. Team down by nine. As we go inside of that Beckman huddle with Todd Troutman.
Gotta play with confidence right now. We're timid right now, right? Okay. Everybody's kind of in everybody's way now, right? Play. Get low. Play defense. Understand where your teammates are. We got a back row set anytime we need it right on the front side. You can't tip right behind the block. That will not be there. You got a tip. It's going to be middle and swing away. Swing between the two blockers. Try to hit that seam if you can. Right. Right. You can't get this done being timid. They're getting great swings. We can get great swings. All right. Trust yourself. Trust each other. We got it.
Go!
[APPLAUSE]
Team on three.
[APPLAUSE]
Get some momentum going.
One of the things Todd Troutman told us was that, you know, the key for this team all season has been the next point mentality to play through some adversity. And he exemplified that. Talking to his team in that huddle there.
Yes to play with confidence. But there's on there playing defense so much right now they need to side out so they can get playing more offense.
Right back up with it. Koelker. Dunkel. And again. Koelker or excuse me. Hogan.
[LAUGHTER] [APPLAUSE]
With the up. And how about the middle? Kluesner says okay, the steady force in the middle. I'll take care of this one. Yes.
Side out great time out there. By Coach Troutman to reset not only their bodies a quick rest, but to reset their minds and play more aggressively and swing away.
But what a run though. By Hinton here in the second set.
Another line shot. Nice adjustment there to dig that up. By Hogan.
And Burkle. Able to power that one through the block.
Yes, she hits the seam there in the block and goes to zone six. Nice set. She powers it through the defense.
And Jaylin Burkle will get an ace. This season she's had over 460 successful serves.
That means that the front row is very strong as well.
Charlson big swing and that'll end the threat with a side out for Hinton. Now here's Brynlee Boeve.
[APPLAUSE] [MUSIC]
Off the free ball. We'll see if they can score off of it.
Dunkel sets up her middle and guess what? They make it pay. Ellie Friessen great transition to come right back after that ball.
You have to expect it to go to your middle on a free ball, and you want to do everything that you can to give Hinton a tougher ball, so they can't
[LAUGHTER]
run quick out of the
[APPLAUSE]
middle.
Out of system as booby will set it up for
[LAUGHTER]
Charlson. Koelker trying to find Burkle to go back to the other side, and it's effective. A kill for Kluesner.
Kluesner a nice job on the right side, hitting it off the block. It goes out of bounds to score.
Isabel Kluesner.
Well, this Beckman Catholic team. You know, one of the things Coach Troutman said is, you know, their practices are very competitive as they get an opportunity. They're all set up by a very aggressive serve.
Yes. There was some confusion that usually doesn't happen. I think they always assume that Boeve will take everything because she usually does. A moment of breakdown there, and we'll see if Beckman Catholic can capitalize.
They go to their middle and there's Friesen again. Dunkel knew right away what she was going to do there.
Yes. When it's working, keep doing it.
Boeve serve and a block knocked down by Ortegren and Friessen.
Yes, that ball set too far off the net. Her hitter couldn't hit it as hard as she wanted to. Increasing the odds of it being an error.
[LAUGHTER]
Out of system ball.
Yeah. Boobie. Over to the outside. Ortegren and Hinton will get the point as that was blocked out.
Nice assist by the libero Boeve.
She's had a few this year, but Dunkel has been the quarterback who's really stirred this ship. Here's Koelker trying to find her hitters, get them involved and Burkle attack long and we are at set point for Hinton.
That one set back a little bit as well. She hits it behind her head and it
[APPLAUSE]
sails too long.
Good. Up by Boobie again. Now the swing by Ortegren and Beckman Catholic will get the side out. We'll go to set point number two.
The defense of Hinton always needs to be low and quick, ready to react because you saw Addie Koelker, the setter for Beckman Catholic
[APPLAUSE]
trying to dump it.
On the serve. Bri Blush will come back in. Here's Jacey
[APPLAUSE]
Burkle. And not going to get it. Hinton will take the second set. 2515. We are all tied up at a set apiece. As you're watching the class 2A State Volleyball Championship here on Iowa PBS.

Well, we are all tied up as we're about ready to get the third set underway. Beckman Catholic Hinton. Here in the class two, a state championship on Iowa PBS Dr. Joanna Settles B.J. Schaben. Here as we take a look at the 2A tournament bracket. How did we get here? How about hitting, beating Hudson, then knocking off previously unbeaten Riverside and Beckman Catholic survived a thriller, a five setter against Grundy Center to advance to today. And what we've seen so
[MUSIC]
far, I mean, Beckman Catholic came out and just played really well on that opening set. The heating cooled off in the second.
They did, because the offense of Hinton started going and they set the right side often, and Charlson had six kills in that second set. Can they keep it going?
It was a big set indeed for Hinton. And now we enter the third set of play. As Beckman Catholic cooled off a little bit, hit 286 in the opening set. 203 for the game now. And how about Hinton's numbers hitting now at 316. So the opening point. We'll see how this one plays out.
They start right away going to Charleston and then an air on the tip trying to hit the back left corner there to zone one. And it's mishandled for the
[APPLAUSE]
air.
So Beckman Catholic like they've done in the two previous sets, get the opening point. Big swing by Charlson right back at it. Kluesner. Dunkel to the outside. And how about the facial? Oh!
With the strong cross court shot.
Hogan can usually pick up those balls, but it was just. Again, when they go quick. Hinton very effective and a service error.
Jaylin Burkle serving.
And Burkle gives one right back to Hinton. Kauffman all knotted up at two.
Yes. Macie Charlson out for three rotations now who will step up for Hinton?
You know in the match for Beckman Catholic against Grundy Center. They went back and forth a seesaw battle, each team winning one set. Then the other team would win. They went to the fifth and Beckman Catholic was able to outlast Grundy Center, who was the second seed. Days in a row. How's the endurance?
That's why it's so key that they have a balanced offense, and both teams do. So they have as fresh of legs as they can.
Dunkel went deep. Great hustle and it pays off. How about Jaylin Burkle keeping that one alive for Beckman Catholic?
Yes. Great back row defense, but it's Addie Koelker with the setter dump for the score.
Big swing down the line and Hinton able to get the side out.
Ellie Friessen had the last point to score for the set to win. And here she is again. Can play out of the middle this time out of the left side with a
[LAUGHTER]
big.
[LAUGHTER]
A big spike there.
Freezing in Ortegren leading the way with seven kills each and a swing on this side by Joy Burkle.
Joy Burkle. Hear your coach say swing away and she does.
Tied up at four. Macie Charlson leading the way with ten kills for Hinton.
That was tight.
Another bobble out of system. It turns to the freezing. And Beckman Catholic unable to keep that one going as Hinton takes the lead.
The right side is hot for the Blackhawks. They continue to score on that right side.
And Friessen a service error.
[APPLAUSE] [APPLAUSE]
Joy Burkle serving.
Now. Joy Burkle. Good hustle
[APPLAUSE]
by Dunkel. All set up by the receive and pass. And that one gets in daggers.
[APPLAUSE]
Blush.
[LAUGHTER]
Blush is playing lights out. That one drops into the corner, just barely a line. Judge sees it and calls it.
Oh, tremendous hustle. And a blocked back. How about that for Beckman Catholic, who? Wow.
Big block. It goes outside. And the double block sends it right back.
Just the hustle to keep that one alive. You always got to stick your arm out. And that time, arm or nothing. Kempema says I got it.
[APPLAUSE] [APPLAUSE] [LAUGHTER]
Macie Charlson Dunkel service.
So here's Addie Dunkel. And a block. Oh, it's kept alive. We play on Charlson just over swing. Swung and Beckman Catholic goes up by two.
And that's the danger of hitting the line. Is that you over. Rotate there and take it wide right.
Great hands that time by Hogan. Set up here by Koelker. To the
[APPLAUSE]
outside. Now they go to the middle and just a little long.
You see both teams starting to tip a little bit more as they. The fatigue sets in here in set three and you'll hear both coaches saying keep hitting, keep hitting. You have to transition to get back because we want you swinging, hitting the ball hard.
Battle at the net.
[LAUGHTER]
Koelker goes to her middle again, hitting so strong there. The wall. The roll shot Dunkel to Charlson. Seeing some great action. Ten feet in on each side here in this point.
[APPLAUSE]
What a volley!
Charlson waited for it and a great. Up by Burkle. Quick dump! Everybody's ready. What a point! Oh! Hogan! There! Oh, this is so good. And not enough on it. And Beckman Catholic will take the point.
I think I'm worn out from that. Oh my goodness. It went back and forth and back and forth. There's the block. They play it up. It keeps going. Blush to the back row. It's played. And just not not enough oomph to get it there. So Beckman Catholic gets the serve.
And again a great up by Hogan. Reset off the slide. And a net violation. Called against Hinton and Beckman Catholic with their largest lead here as they go up by three. Hinton will take a time out. We'll stay in the know with Iowa Press. Join Kay Henderson and guests for in-depth conversations on the issues shaping Iowa. Tune in Friday nights at 730 and Sundays at noon on Iowa PBS or stream online anytime.
[MUSIC]
What we said this might be the best match of the day, and so far, it's
[MUSIC]
shaping up to be a really good one. Could be a great one. As we've seen the play out here, just all over the floor.
It is. That last one was such a long volley. Sometimes you play competitively in practice and sometimes you play where you just want the ball to keep going, and that's what it felt like. But so much momentum to whomever would score that point. And that time. Beckman Catholic came up with it. Can they continue to build a bigger lead? They're up by three here. What can they add on?
Just as a reminder, in case you may have forgotten, neither school has won a state volleyball championship. So that's what they're playing for is the title. But also to bring some hardware back to the respective schools. As we see the Time-out effective as Hinton able to get the side out on the Service error.
Yes, definitely. The most service errors here in set three. Only two by each team going into this set.
Charlson had that one tipped up and it's effective for Jaylin Burkle. She said, I'll just take it over.
Yes, Dunkel used to always taking the second ball there. So that was the confusion between Boeve and Dunkel.
Hogan up to Koelker and it's effective. Wow, what a strike. That combo Hogan to Koelker to their hitters has been on here in the third set.
Yes. Isabel Kluesner there gets a hold of one and rips it
[LAUGHTER]
out of the middle.
[LAUGHTER]
Big swing by Burkle coming right back at you and they're going to say that one was held on the hip of Ortegren as she went for the block. And now Beckman Catholic getting some distance here in the third set.
They are a nice job by Friessen and company for Hinton blocking the ball. They have to continue to get there quickly and press their hands over.
Charlson swing, and that's going to be unable to be received as Charlson Macy coming through with a side out.
Yes, I hope they continue to set her because she has a powerful swing and the block has not been able to affect her much. Good up.
Yeah. Terrific. Up out of that back row by Pigott.
Boeve the one handed. Keeping it alive. What a defensive play by her.
And it pays off as a five point lead. Now down to three.
She anticipates the ball so well. Where is it going to be? She's quick to move there, but she's always thinking a play ahead.
Hoefling serve and it's an ace.
[APPLAUSE] [APPLAUSE] [MUSIC]
Such a tough serve and Beckman Catholic can't keep it alive.
Big swing. Did it get in? Yes. Joy. Burkle.
Burkle.
What a line shot. She turns, goes down the line and dents the floor.
Isabel Kluesner ready to go. And an attack error. Trailblazers will keep it going.
That was a tough ball for Addie Dunkel to get to. She has to use her platform to get it up and it goes deep.
Koelker over
[LAUGHTER]
to Burkle. Goes to her again. Dunkel. And Beckman Catholic just lost track of the ball. Taylor Luensmann tried to go after it to set it back towards the offense.
[LAUGHTER] [LAUGHTER]
There it goes. That was the hard hit of Addie Ortegren for Hinton.
[LAUGHTER]
Back row attack. Now. Played up by Boeve.
She found it right there. Now here's Hogan trying to get involved and the quick dump down. That's Ellie Friessen.
Brynlee Boeve doing everything she can, even if it's one handed. Here she is covering it. There's the left hand. It comes over quickly. Well played. Coming over on two to score.
How active? I mean, you think of how active the hands are of each. I mean, all the teams we've seen here at the state tournament. You got to keep them going just like that. Luensmann gets into the kill department.
Yeah. Just went Hinton has a lot of momentum off the last play. Beckman Catholic comes right back. Taylor Luensmann a beautiful block.
[LAUGHTER] [APPLAUSE] [LAUGHTER]
So off of the rotation, dropping back to serve as Jacey Burkle.
Hard to handle.
And an attack error.
The serving pass game is so important. Serving it tough serving this scenes, trying to get them out of system so that Dunkel doesn't take that second ball is what Beckman Catholic is trying to do.
Dunkel goes to the outside. That's Derocher and it's effective. Found her at the right time to get the side out here for Hinton.
Neither team able to go on a deep scoring run as we continue to go back and back and forth in this battle.
Friessen serve and error.
Service error is continuing to accumulate.
It's been a yo yo effect after Beckman Catholic has gotten a five point lead. We've seen it trimmed down to three. Never closer than that. Now it's back up again to five. And I believe a Time-out is going to be taken here by Hinton. Oh, the Trailblazers. Let's go inside of that hitting huddle here.
Right. We're hitting everything from the ten foot line. So she's running all over. Move our feet. Pass it out. Okay. Be aggressive. Go out and win it. If you want to win. All right. You got to take control right now. That's what you want. Get it up to the center. We got three hitters to put them down. Okay. And play
[APPLAUSE]
defense.
[APPLAUSE]
Get moving.
One. Three. One two. Three.
All right. That's inside the huddle. That was Robyn Moore speaking. We have Kate Ortegren mic'd up their co-head coaches. Now this is nothing new really for the Hinton community. Their football team. Well, with head coaches and very successful in high school football. And as you see it for the Blackhawks. What did you pick up there?
You know get aggressive, move your feet, take control. Play defense. Just trying to get his team fired up to cut it to, you know less than five here if they can get back. But here's you know now they're at four. What can they do to inch away. And one important point for Hinton is now Macie Charlson is in. And she's had such a big set to. She's playing very well on the right side. Look for Hinton to go to her right away.
Addison Dunkel trying to stay there and serve and a block, but it's out. How about Bri Blush? What a. What a day she's having.
It's so impressive. Beckman Catholic with three big hitters. Joy Burkle up front. Taylor Luensmann up front now it's Kluesner just so solid all the way around, but it's Bri Blush playing very well, tooling the block.
115 kills coming into the state championship and now with eight today.
[LAUGHTER]
So far out of system and the attack. No touch. Hinton will get the side out.
Yes, Koelker wanted to run a quicker offense there, so shot it out with a lower set to the outside but not in sync on that one.
Chloe Piggott back into serve. That hits tape. Beckman able to play through it. And now an attack error. And the Blackhawks get within 2 or 3.
Underneath of that one to send it deep.
Bend down by as many as five.
[APPLAUSE]
Big swing the block. But it's out. Jaylin Burkle with the kill.
Yeah. What a kill. Because who you're going against, you're going against Charlson and Kempema with that big right side double block. There it is. And she stays in bounds. So wise lets it bounce out and they get the serve back.
J Burkle five eight going against 6161 and six two. And there's Charlson. Again involved here. And a great afternoon for her. And double digits in kills. Now all the way up to 12. Koelker to Burkle. Hello.
Burkle splits the defense there. Finds the middle of the court. Here comes the ball. Right through the block. And it's open in zone
[LAUGHTER]
six.
[LAUGHTER]
And that gets in. Friessen able to find the line.
Such quick side outs. Nice play there by Friessen. Mixing things up. She's been hitting it well. And now and tipping it short there. She tips it deep to the corner.
Friesen in double figure kills with ten.
[APPLAUSE]
Out of system. Now back to it. Burkle down the line. And it gets in.
Straight line shot by Burkle. But it was the the set from the other side of the court by Koelker that set her teammate up to be amazing.
How did Kluesner.
[LAUGHTER]
Trying to find that back corner. There's the setter dump picked up by Boeve.
Now Dunkel to the outside. Ortegren with the shot. What an up.
She crushed that one.
We'll play again. Ortegren now will just float it over. That did hit tape. Burkle off of hands. Whoa! We're at set point.
Both outsides know what's on the line. Audi Ortegren Ortegren with her best hit of the evening, but it was played up and Burkle gets to come back with one of her own.
Set point here in the third. Big smash. It's down the kill by Luensmann to end the third set. Beckman Catholic now up two sets to one.
That one could have gone either way.
What a finish for the Trailblazers. We'll go to the fourth when we return here on Iowa PBS.

[MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC] [MUSIC]
Well, Beckman Catholic
[MUSIC]
the Trailblazers need to win another set, and they'd win their school's first ever state volleyball championship as they lead it two sets to one. But Dr. Joanna Settles, this is B.J. Schaben, and it's been very entertaining. We've seen some very long and exhausting points. But how how is Beckman Catholic ahead here.
You know they're staying more aggressive minded on their hitting. You have Burkle on the outside. She now has ten kills. They're getting it to the middle. They're doing very well. But it's that mindset of aggressive on that third contact.
Well, as we take a look at the highlights here, you know first off with Hinton, they were able to get things going. At one point during this match. They were hitting better than 360.
And where they're going from the right side to Charlson, they're going to the left side. And there is a nice redirect there for the Dunkel score. This one goes outside powering it through. How about Joy Burkle? Nice pick up there. The back set, that one coming across. That one was Kluesner. And then oh by the way, you can go over in two and that's Koelker with the setter dump for the score.
So Beckman Catholic the Trailblazers lead at two sets to one. As we go to the fourth. They were in this spot yesterday, two against Grundy Center Grundy Center able to force a fifth. And that is what Hinton is hoping for coming into the fourth. What do the Blackhawks of Hinton need to do to force that fifth set here in the fourth?
You know, they have to serve better. They missed too many serves in that set, so they've got to take care of serving tough, but serving it over. If you're going to miss, you at least want to try to go for that deep line. You don't want to hit the ball into the net. So too many service errors for them. They now have seven service errors in these first three sets, so look for them to play a little cleaner, a little sharper and be
[APPLAUSE]
aggressive.
Yeah, Hinton in that third set, hitting just over 41.
There's a nice aggressive serve to get Beckman Catholic out of system right away. Look for this quick offense.
It's a strike but played up Burkle with the quick poke.
Out of system. The other way goes outside. And how about Taylor?
Yeah, Derocher able to get things going and Hinton able to capture the first point here in the fourth set.
What I like about that also is there's so much focus on the right side with Charlson, and you come back over to the other pin and a nice cross court swing.
Quick tap move right there again. Derocher. Hey, she's got the hot hand here in the fourth.
That's how you two that block they push it off the outside hands of that double block to score.
Derocher. Now with seven kills. Roll shot. Hinton right there. They won the second set hitting very well right at 441 in which they captured that 125 to 15. And now we see a side out as Beckman Catholic able to get back on serve.
They are this is Jaylin Burkle now serving. Can they keep Hinton out of system?
Here comes the attack. Going to be blocked back.
[LAUGHTER]
Played over
[APPLAUSE]
Koelker.
She couldn't get there for the slide. A smart tip to keep it in play.
Koelker again goes to her middle and Kluesner gave it her best but got handcuffed on the set.
Just mistimed it a little bit. Good attempt.
Great crowd on both sides for this 2A championship. Big swing Burkle blocked back. Kept alive. Dunkel goes to the outside. Ortegren able to find it.
Ortegren was not planning on tipping that ball. She wanted to swing away, but it was behind her head. She went a little too soon, dropped it in and placed it perfectly.
Quick move. They go back to the outside. Good. Up that time by Pigott Charlson. Big swing to get fingertips
[APPLAUSE]
. And Beckman Catholic attacking the setter Dunkel. And guess what
[APPLAUSE]
Hinton says. You know what? We can go out of system.
Yes, they sure can. A nice job by putting up a good ball and a wise contact there. By Addie Ortegren. So a lot of momentum up five one.
And a time-out going to be taken here by Beckman Catholic. They lead it two sets to one. But here in the fourth find themselves down by four. And let's go inside of that Hinton huddle.
So don't quit. Even if we get a good solid block, be ready for it to come back over. Okay. Blockers. It looks great. You're doing what you need to do. You're blocking straight down. You're getting close. Okay. Keep your block in middle backs. They're going line on that shot. Okay, Chloe, move up a little bit on line shot. Okay. Be ready for that. Right. Dig that line. That's what we work on. Yeah. Come on, let's
[APPLAUSE]
go.
[APPLAUSE]
Come on, get it on three.
[APPLAUSE]
One.
[APPLAUSE]
Two.
[APPLAUSE]
Three.
[APPLAUSE]
Up.
Different sounding huddle there, wouldn't you agree?
Yes. It was staying aggressive offensively which they're doing. But they want to make sure that they're blocking the cross court shot. They're giving them the line. And they know that their defense will be there. And right now that's Chloe Pigott. And how about her defensive play as a defensive specialist. She's doing great.
[APPLAUSE]
Hinton ready to go here with Chloe Pigott and a little strong effective time-out for Beckman Catholic Side out.
Yes. And those are those good bad serves right. It was close. You challenged the serve. Receivers barely missed it. You made them think at least.
To the outside. And that's an effective kill put down by Ortegren.
Right. And she went after the hands of Koelker. Knowing that's the shorter blocker and gets one off of her hands.
[LAUGHTER]
Out of system here. Now they get it set up. Koelker goes to the middle. Luensmann
[LAUGHTER]
gave it a big swing. Good up out of the back row by Burkle opportunity here for the Blackhawks. Friessen tried to get it down, but there is Hogan again.
There's that line dig coach talked about.
And a joust at the net, but they're going to say Hinton went into the net. Dunkel right hand got into the
[APPLAUSE]
net. And she's saying I didn't touch it. And Nikki O'Keefe saying
[LAUGHTER]
I saw it. So we'll play on.
Dunkel and Hinton not agreeing with that call. That was a decisive call by a referee. So we play on.
You know, a lot of times you see that throughout the season. You know how do you play after those close calls as Hinton went right back after it. What's your composure
[APPLAUSE]
like? Charlson well, it looks good right now. As they go up by fours.
Yes. How about Macie Charlson didn't take a good approach on that one. Didn't transition well, but she rises up, swings hard with her left hand and hits the ball hard.
What Thunder out of that left hand? Burkle right back at it now. Dunkel to the outside. Again. There's a powerful swing. Addie Ortegren.
Yes. Beckman Catholic doesn't want to see her. And all the shots that she has, if she gets fired up, she can score a lot of points.
Ortegren a double double, 12 kills, ten digs and Hinton keeps on rolling. That's Friessen yes.
Ellie Friessen nice job listening to her coach saying keep blocking, keep blocking, keep moving. Anticipate. Press that your hands over. And that's a big score for Hinton.
Luensmann. There's some power out of the middle side out. Beckman Catholic.
Taylor Luensmann was quiet early and she has come alive here. And it's such an impact player.
And Joy Burkle puts an ace on the board.
She dropped in the short serve. So effective. You serve deep, you serve deep. You come back and get an ace.
Right back at it. Oregon. Gets the side out.
Now not all hitters like to hit out of the right side when they're so used to the left side, but I would say that Addie Ortegren likes the right side as well, because as soon as she gets a kill, she gets to go back and serve. Look for them, even to set her in the back row because she is on right now.
Big swing by Blush dug up nicely out of the back.
Nice pick up by Hogan.
This one will get over to the outside. They go to Derocher. And the Blazers able to get the side out. Hinton trying to force a fifth set. Beckman Catholic. Trying to bring home a championship. Their first in volleyball. Friessen went deep. They found the opening.
It's hard to cover every square inch of this court. There's Ellie Friessen tipping it all the way to the back zone. Five corner.
, 11
[LAUGHTER]
kills for Friessen. Big swing. Good up. Friessen now. Will try to pass it forward. Does to her setter and Dunkel. Out to the outside. Derocher tries to go deep and she forced the issue.
She does Taylor Derocher with the power tip right down the line.
Hinton with their largest lead here now at six in the fourth set. This is reminiscent of the second set in which Hinton won 25 to 15 side out here for Beckman Catholic.
Yes, nice quick attack by Isabel Kluesner for the kill. Both teams playing very
[APPLAUSE]
well.
Here's Amaya Koelker. Dunkel over to Kempema, but that one was blocked back in. What a
[APPLAUSE]
wall!
Yes. Kempema thought she got it. She took a big swing. But how about that double block by Beckman Catholic.
[APPLAUSE]
Dunkel off to Derocher and there's. Excuse me. Yeah. To Derocher. That's a kill. 138. Back to a five point advantage as Hinton has been really effective. And you had mentioned, you know, we'll wait till after this serve here before we mentioned it. You mentioned they've got to have good clean serves. And Dyersville or excuse me, Beckman Catholic able to get the side out as this one goes to 13 to 9.
Beckman Catholic you want to have a first ball side out. And they did right there to shut things down for Hinton.
Swing at the net. Played up and the R2. Karl Wooldridge said we saw a lift there.
Yes. Addison Hogan ran all the way under to the other side of the court there. She's picking up so many balls, such hustle out of her as she stays low and quick and anticipates where the ball is going.
Well, we pick it and has had a long time tonight at that service night here in the fourth.
That ball tight to the net. Easier to block. And again pin to pin. They go back to the right side. It's touched goes off the block for the third try for the score.
Kluesner getting the kill. And you know that's just confidence in your setter here isn't it. With Koelker able to find Kluesner.
Yes, but you're really working the middles. They're having to go to the left, to the right, back to the left. You're working them hard. And so a nice job by the setter to make the defense move.
Burkle gets it. And how about this? A six point lead is now down to three.
Yes. Joy Burkle that one was not pretty, but it worked. As she tips it over that double block and it drops in to the small hole in the defense.
[LAUGHTER] [APPLAUSE]
At the net. Dunkel put it up. Nobody came home to recover and Beckman Catholic is within two now and a time-out going to be taken by Hinton. So Beckman Catholic coach Troutman, in his 30th season of coaching two different stints here for Beckman Catholic. Let's listen in and see what he's saying.
[APPLAUSE]
Okay. Who's Back row right now? All right. Make sure you get a great read on it where you're at. Okay? Always put yourself in position for that back row attack. Okay. After you make the play on defense, get up in position. Okay. Keep things rolling. Okay. A middle back will always be ready if you need him. Okay. All right.
Questions?
Everybody good? Watch the tips. Read everything. Get a touch on things. Get our block penetrate. Let's go. Here we.
Go. Team on three.
All right. How do you break that down for those at home?
You know, I'd say Coach Troutman is pretty confident. Just some quick reminders. Read those tips so you can anticipate where that ball is going. And blockers try to get a touch on it. You don't have to get a stuff block, but try to slow it down for the defense.
Well, think about that. We mentioned the two different stints of coaching for Coach Troutman, his 30th season overall started in 1986 to 2005, then took 12 years off and came back. He was there coaching the team. Championship match Hinton gets a much needed side out from Charlson.
Yes, one thing I liked about Coach Troutman also is just his demeanor, right? He's not nervous. He's just very relaxed, kind of modeling that confidence and poise that he wants his players to play with.
Blocked back by
[APPLAUSE]
Charlson and Hinton takes it from 2 to 4.
Charleston with a big block. It goes outside and they're trying to take the cross court shot away and they are. They'll look for them to try to hit down the line
[LAUGHTER]
again.
This one going to go to Beckman Catholic. Just a passing error there. Side out Trailblazers.
[APPLAUSE] [APPLAUSE]
Bri Blush.
JSI Burkle. Now serving.
Her sister Joy wanted to drop back down there. We mentioned Jaycee
[LAUGHTER]
came in and just said that's mine. My serve. I'm coming in. Now she sets to the outside to her sister and that is a rather rude block but effective. Wo Macie Charlson.
Macie Charlson putting up some big numbers. Now what do you do? Here she is. Watch her on the left side of your screen. Press over with impeccable timing for the double block. I say set the right side and give your outsides a break for a minute with Beckman Catholic.
They go their Bri Blush and you are right on coach.
Yes, Blush has played so well. A couple mishaps in the last set, but she plays confidently. She's a bit undersized but places the ball so well and has a quick arm swing.
Now the junior tying a career best nine kills in the match and Hinton able to get the side out as they're starting to march towards 25 and force a fifth set.
They are Ellie Friessen that time comes to the outside. On the left side, she hits down the line so well.
Back pass. There's Blush.
Nice right side attack again.
This one blocked. And the point will go to Beckman Catholic.
Yes, Taylor Luensmann and Bri Blush with the double block keeping the momentum alive. So strong for Beckman Catholic.
Addi Hogan serve. Big swing down the line. And Hinton able to get it with Friessen.
Friessen on the left. Freezing in the middle. Freezing on the right. She's doing a fantastic job, especially when Charleston is on the bench for three rotations.
12 kills for Friessen now
[LAUGHTER]
serving. Big swing in the middle and it's good. Isabel Kluesner.
[APPLAUSE]
Two.
Nice job by the back row to get a good ball up, even on a Serve receive to be able to set your middle attackers.
Beckman Catholic trying to make their move here in the fourth set. Opportunity here. Kelchner and a block. Oh Kempema. See here. The fans who on that block.
Kempema got up high on this one. Look at that. She puts it right down in the other direction. Again. I think Beckman Catholic will have to work the right side and middle of their offense.
Back row attack right there is Dunkel.
[LAUGHTER]
Out of system ball. Not aggressive enough.
Groovy to the outside.
Down ball. Who can get in system and put some heat on it.
Big swing by Kluesner handled though by Hinton. Shot down the line and the Blackhawks will go up by five.
That seemed like a quick three rotations that Charleston was out, but she comes back with some noise down the line again for the score for Hinton.
Blackhawks trying to force a fifth set here. A time-out taken by Beckman Catholic. As the crowds have just been phenomenal all week long and championship Thursday. It's been tremendous. The seats have been filled. The excitement is there. You know volleyball is the most participated sport in the state of Iowa by a lot. And the popularity has caught on. And the fans have really caught on.
It's such a fun game to watch. Everybody is excited. You know, even watching college volleyball. But here at the state tournament, it's a lot of fun. 11,000 girls in Iowa playing such a great game and it's such a team sport, so much fun at all levels. Freshman JV varsity. It's just been a great fall for so many.
2116. Hinton down two sets to one. Want to take it to five and take their chances to 15.
An important pass here for Beckman Catholic to get in system.
They go to the middle Burkle a little sneak attack as Koelker is able to find Joy Burkle right.
And the reason that offense happens for the trailblazers is because Addison Hogan can pass the ball so well. Look at her on Serve receive get it right to her setter so they can go to the middle.
Dunkel to the outside. Big swing that time handled by the Blazers. Now they're off the slide. Dunkel again comes back to Charlson. What power.
Macie Charlson. I saw her face as she was approaching right here and she crushes that one as well. She's feeling it. She knows she needs to get this set for her team so they can push it to
[LAUGHTER]
five.
[LAUGHTER]
Off the back pass. And that one goes through Isabel Kluesner Addy Koelker I mean she's got magic. Hands up front.
She does a nice job again there keeping the ball on the right side of the court away from the big block on the right side of Charleston. So that's wise and that's very strategic.
41 assists for Koelker on the other side. Dunkel with 45.
Tipping it over.
To the outside. Ortegren what a shot. A little change up.
What a great time to use all the tools in your toolbox. The defense of Beckman Catholic was back ready for a heart attack, and she drops it in with the off speed.
Booby with a knuckleball.
[APPLAUSE]
And we are at set
[APPLAUSE]
point.
Brynlee Boeve. That's a big score for the
[APPLAUSE]
Blackhawks.
[APPLAUSE]
Booby. Big swing Burkle blocked, but out will go to set point number two.
[APPLAUSE]
Beckman Catholic went to the left side there, even though they have the Friessen Charlson double block. Hinton. Looking to finish this set right on this play.
Here's Dunkel goes to Charlson and that'll do it. We'll go to five.
Great touch by Hogan but they can't keep it alive to five. We go.
Yeah. A race to 15. When we return in the class two a state championship. It's Hinton taking two sets. Beckman Catholic with two sets here on Iowa PBS.

[MUSIC]
Okay, well, we can catch our breath as Hinton and Beckman Catholic are going to have a race to 15. This is where it's been exciting all year for these two squads. Beckman Catholic has won 33 of the last, or 34 of the last 35 matches they've played in for Hinton. They've just been rolling all season long, sitting at 33 and three. They've been in this spot before, played in last year's 2A state championship and came up short against Denver.
Yes, this is going to be so exciting. Let's take a look at a few of the statistics coming in. We talk about the balance scoring of both teams. Beckman Catholic now Joy Burkle has 14 kills, as does Isabelle Kluesner and then nine from Bri Blush and nine from Jaylin Burkle. So such great balance. But it's Macie Charlson. She comes into the state tournament. The third best
And the third most in kills for her team. And she is running away with the kill category. She has 17 of her own. They start her in rotation for. So that her. So that zone for so that she can have three full rotations before she substitutes.
Well the block has been on for both teams to Hinton with 16 blocks.
Yes. And none of those are solos. That's pretty cool.
And 11 for Beckman Catholic and a service error to start things off as Beckman Catholic garners. The first point.
Right? That's the risk they were willing to take. They were hoping for an ace to catch that deep line. Back and forth we go.
Dunkel going to leave it up. And that one still in play and played over. We're still in game action. Koelker to the outside to Burkle. And now we have a whistle. And crossing the center line was Hinton as Carl Woolridge was right on top of
[APPLAUSE]
it.
That was unfortunate for Hinton, as they were just transitioning.
Two oh. Beckman Catholic. Quick high tap right back to it. The Blazers go with the attack with Burkle Koelker dialing it up on the outside. Now Burkle to Burkle here.
Big cross court kill there. Boeve was there but couldn't handle it. This is an early big 3 to 0 lead now by Beckman Catholic.
Hinton wanting to get the side out here to the front. They go back to their bread and butter. That's Charlson had it blocked back.
[LAUGHTER]
Joust at the net now. Back row. Attack. Ortegren and out of system here. Burkle down the line. Good up by Ortegren. And we're still in
[LAUGHTER]
action. Off the slide. No touch. As Hinton will get the side out.
Quick reactions on defense for Hinton. Derocher barely touched it and it went over huge to get the serve back.
Now Chloe Pickett, who's been really effective on serve today. A couple of bases.
She has. She's played some great defense especially down the line as well.
Oh a collision. And Beckman Catholic able to regather Burkle. What a shot.
Nice job. By Joy Burkle to power it through. It's such a big block a big swing. And she tries to hit through their hands and does to fire up her Trailblazers.
Don't play poker with her. She was reading those hands all the way and an attack error and the Trailblazers are up four and a Time-out going to be taken here by Hinton. Let's go inside the huddle.
Okay, so
[APPLAUSE]
you're not going to have a straight shot into the middle pin to pin or push. Deep corners are open. Okay, if you're going to tip, you got to sell it. You got to go like you're going hard and then put it in there. Okay. Can't give them free balls. Everything we have has got to be aggressive going at them. Okay, here's the deal. Start with the pass. We're not getting anything great up to Addy right now. Okay, so they know what we're running. Give them something good. Back
[APPLAUSE]
row.
[APPLAUSE]
Come on, let's.
[APPLAUSE]
Go.
[APPLAUSE]
Don't quit. Don't quit.
Come back, come back!
Come on.
Kate Ortegren with the instruction. What do you think?
She's trying to fire up her back row. They've got to get a better ball to their setter. Addy. And then they can work their magic in the front row. Easier said than done, because all the energy and momentum is on Beckman Catholic side right now. So they're going to serve hard and aggressive and try to run away with this fifth set.
They're a third of the way there. But for Hinton, they don't get rattled. They've been in a lot of state tournaments in multiple sports. In fact, winning the class 2A state basketball championship last year. And there's a shot down the line. And it's going to be out as the Trailblazers go up by five.
They do a good swing on that one. But the ball was set a little too far off the net for her.
Charlson can't get it now. The quick poke with the up. That's Dunkel to the outside and the big swing by Ortegren handled by Burkle out of the back. Now her twin sister gets another kill as she hits it off of hands.
What a dig by Jaylin Burkle because Addy Ortegren crushed that ball defense into offense. Here it is. There's the press through the block for the score.
This one kept alive out of system. Burkle blocked back, but up and yeah, we're going to see a double hit. And Hinton will get the point
[APPLAUSE]
here. Boy a lot of work to do for the Blackhawks Brynlee Boeve.
Just one point at a time mentality. Back row attack here.
And just misfired by Burkle that looked like a tired get up, right?
Yes, that was not there. That was definitely the fourth or fifth option that they wanted to go with. And anything can happen in a fifth set. You know that if you've been watching Iowa volleyball this week.
Now back pass big block again, but held in opportunity here. Boeve to Dunkel. They go to the outside. Charlson she'll rattle it off hands.
And that's what coach was talking about because Boeve makes the perfect pass to Addy right there. Setting up the kill to the right side. And who is it yet again? Macie Charlson.
And a Service error.
This is where Beckman Catholic wants to capitalize on this momentum off the missed serve. Keep it going. Blush now in a strong front line with Lindeman. Burkle, Luensmann and
[APPLAUSE]
Blush.
Dunkel tries to go outside.
[APPLAUSE]
Ortegren. Now the quick tap over will reset here. Friessen. That's a powerful shot and a much needed point for Hinton.
Both teams able to pass well and get right back in it 8 to 5. This is anybody's game.
Hinton the number one team in class 2A from the start of the season up until now here in the state championship, they played with a lot of poise throughout the year and trying to battle their way back. But Beckman Catholic trying to get win number 40 in the school's first ever state title. Go up by four, right?
She comes inside that ball set inside. She still goes after it and powers it through.
And a service error.
That one was risky. That one made me nervous, man, if it's that close, take it. But they were confident.
Ready to go again with Burkle
[LAUGHTER]
or. Excuse me. I beg your pardon? With Ortegren.
That one rolled over.
Dunkel to the middle to Friessen kept alive. To the outside.
Burkle movies right there.
And now the shot. And just a not enough air underneath of it as it's a hitting error.
Yes, this is the rotation for Hinton where they only have two hitters inside in the front row. Because Dunkel is setting. So look for them to go to Ellie Friessen wherever she is, whether that's on the middle or the right side.
Beckman Catholic now just five points away.
Free ball you have to capitalize.
And go to. Friessen. And they do.
[APPLAUSE]
Friessen. Out of the middle there's a double block, but she finds the hole.
Back at it into the middle again. Hinton.
[APPLAUSE]
There. Dunkel will lay it up to the outside. Derocher off of hands right up out of the back by Burkle. Dunkel again will leave it for a back row. Attack the tap over. Oh what a hustle! By Hogan. Back again. Derocher blocked back.
Both teams playing so well, picking up every ball.
And that tap over long. What a point. Won by Beckman Catholic.
This 117 serve right here. Important for Beckman Catholic. Hinton has to get a good touch on it. You know that. Brynlee Boeve hopes they serve to her and they don't.
Amaya Koelker with the tough serve. And again, a hitting error. And this one's at 127 and a time-out taken by the Blackhawks. The lead at five Beckman Catholic needing three to win a state championship. Let's go inside of that huddle and hear from their head coach, Todd Troutman.
Coming over here. Play D you make the play. Get back up and put yourself in position. Okay? All right. You get a good transition ball. The opportunity's there. Make sure you get a good run. Give her a little space off the net. The swing. But we got good options. All right. I trust you. Joy will be ready for going back row. Focus. Every play Hogan left behind.
Let's go.
Three points to go for Beckman Catholic. What do you think about the instruction?
I love it. Just a gentle reminder. You need to transition. Be ready. Focus for every point, one at a time. And I love what he says to his team. I trust you. He's confident. He knows they're going to pull this one out.
Beckman Catholic you know, both of these two squads started in early June. Been together for about five months. Beckman Catholic started their season winning the Iowa State University team camp. And now look at him trying to. Premature celebration as Hogan kind of gave a shimmy shove to Kluesner and she said we didn't get the point.
Yes, Isabel Kluesner thought she won that joust, but there was a net violation. All right. This is a stronger front line. Now for Hinton, which is exciting for them as Addison Dunkel, the setter goes back to serve.
Goes very difficult on the serve. Burkle Dunkel with the up move out of system here. Here's Charlson the roll shot back to the middle.
Good touch by Boobie to keep it alive. Here's the free ball.
Great hustle on each team now leaves it to the middle and the block down. This one still up and Burkle with it over. Nothing touching the floor just yet.
Trying to drop that one in. They go outside again. The roll shot doesn't fall. Hogan there now they go to the right side, down the line swing.
And it goes through for Kluesner.
Kluesner great versatility coming out of the middle. That one. That time coming out of the right side. Look at Hogan on the floor. They go to the right side off the block. That's point number 13 for Beckman Catholic.
Inching closer. Now the shot by Charlson that will get down Side out Hinton. But they've got some work to do on serve.
Yes.
You don't want to be on defense when Macie Charlson is coming out of the middle with a good transition and a powerful swing.
Chloe Piggott serve efficiency better than 90% on the season. Now the big swing by Burkle blocked back Beckman Catholic right there and the swing down poked over by Ortegren again. Burkle
[LAUGHTER]
tapped up. Move to the outside to Charlson and that's a hard earned point for Hinton as they now get within three. They've not been closer since the early stages of this set.
What a powerful left handed swing. Macie Charlson gave it all she had right there. I just saw her take a big deep breath. She knows they can keep fighting back.
Now the outside. How about that? Oh, Isabel Kluesner. And now Beckman Catholic. Is at Championship Point.
Isabel Kluesner going against a big double block, but she is confident. She knows that her coach Troutman believes in her and trusts her. And she rips one to get to set point here.
Yeah, she went with the serve. Now back into it on the system. The roll shot kept up out to the outside. Burkle that's your game winner. Say what? Beckman Catholic is your Class 2A state champion. A five setter as Beckman Catholic outlasts Hinton here today, winning the odd sets 2523, dropping the second 2515, winning the third, dropping the fourth, and then again winning the fifth, 15 to 10 to win their school's first ever state volleyball championship.
So much emotion for both teams. For coach Todd Troutman and. Set goes outside and it's touched and Burkle gets another kill. And here they come to celebrate the championship.
It is T-shirt time for sure. What an effort. Joy Burkle 20 kills to lead the way for Beckman Catholic 16 for Isabel Kluesner ten for Jaylin Burkle 20 kills. Pacing the way. Macie Charlson for Hinton.
Also.
The pink shirts are out and they belong to Beckman Catholic.
They're definitely the comeback kids after yesterday, they were had to fight back at the very end. And when you have a coach that believes in you like that, it's pretty special.

Hinton finishing in 33 and four. And what a run. And now time to crown the champs.
And your class 2A champions for 2026. Coach Todd Troutman and the Trailblazers of Beckman Catholic.
30 years Todd Troutman has coached the Trailblazers had them in the 2000 state championship in which they fell, but tonight they get the school's first ever state title. And what a job for the chemistry teacher there at Beckman Catholic.
Yes.
There they go.
So much excitement. It was fun to watch the coaches hugging as well. You see the awesome trophy for the 100 years of girls sports. But the coaches for Beckman Catholic hugging and so much emotion by Coach Todd Troutman that he actually had to sit down for a minute to just take all of this in.
While we have four championships in the books, we have one remaining when we return. It's the one a title match coming up next with Janesville and Ankeny Christian for Dr. Joanna Settles on B.J. Schaben saying see you in just a few moments here on Iowa PBS.
