Iowa Past to Present Teacher's Guide: Chapter 3: Many Flags over Iowa
Introduction
Many streams flow together to make Iowa history. One is the history of the American Indian people who have lived in the region for thousands of years. Another is the story of explorers and settlers from Europe and their descendants whose stay in Iowa has been shorter. The first Europeans came only about three hundred years ago. Iowa's latest settlers came from Southeast Asia as refugees in the 1970s and 1980s. They were invited by the governor of Iowa so they could escape political persecutions and physical harm due to civil war in their own countries. Just as there were different tribes of American Indians with their own customs and languages, there were also different groups of Europeans. Both the French and the English wanted to build an empire in North America. The outcome of that struggle was important for the future of Iowa.
